I gotta be am nuts…

Let’s try to cut a long story short. The guy who sold me the new axle was wrong. It’s not for a 3.2 ton model but for a 2.8 which means smaller brakes (the body of the axle is the same). I was wrong as well. I forgot about the abs system of the van because it’s very rare on these models. So I had two good reasons to put the breaks from the old axle on the new one. Since somebody on the internet stated that the drive shafts are the same I thought I could use the old shafts with an ABS measurement ring in the new axle. This guy was wrong as well, the shafts are not the same.

So I’m sitting on the floor of the workshop being sad. Let’s put all together just the way it was, return the axle to the seller and cut my losses in time and effort. Before I was getting really sad I returned home since it usually doesn’t look that bad at the next day.

The next day: Alright.I can’t switch the shafts. So the new shafts need ABS rings. There are only two problems. First the Axle has no seat for an ABS ring and second according to the Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) the ABS Ring is not available as a part. The guy at the dealership said the same (hence using the same tool probably).

This picture shows the absence of an seat for an ABS ring. So there is nothing to be seen here. Yet…

So I decided I won’t try to remove the rings if I can’t get replacements. It’s common knowledge that the axles of the mercedes g-model (decent 4×4) are more or less the same as the ones in my van (merc T1). So I searched ebay for an ad with a picture of an driveshaft which resembles mine and is equipped with an ABS ring. Bingo! The G-(Sub)Model W463.225 has the same driveshafts by the looks of it. For this model the EPC lists an ABS ring which looks like mine and has the same inner diameter. What coincidence! Part Number A4633570051, 3 pieces of total stock in whole Germany, next day delivery, 120€ + tax. Alright. Expensive. But a risk I’m willing to take…

…but it’s a close call…

The save way to remove a ring like this is to apply pressure evenly. Heating is dangerous and difficult because you don’t want to overhead the ring and the shaft is pulling out the heat fast. A rear brake disc/drum combination from the junkpile makes the perfect piece for applying pressure. (After some machining). By the looks I’d guess it’s from a W124 or W201 Merc.

It’s done, I’m back down to two cars…

I sold the Taro (“Muckelchen”) ten days ago and the station wagon went today. I will miss the latter bitterly, despite the small engine it really was a good ride. But next time I’ll buy one of these it will be a E220 or E280. The E220 has the same fuel economy as the E200 but some hp more and a much better torque diagram due to a self adjusting camshaft (or whatever you might call it in english…

Sometimes the universe really takes an efford to lure you out of your misery…

Yesterday I was in the workshop still fiddling with the rear axle. Some attachment points for the break lines broke off and I had to weld new ones, the screws for the driveshaft were to short so I couldn’t go for a test drive.

Instead of just going home I followed the noises I was hearing for a couple of hours by then. First it resembled a sound check and after that some punkrock/hardcore. Just a couple of hundred meters away from the workshop was a small festival. Weird. Just a minute after I arrived somebody on the stage announced the next band. Ego vs. Emo. The new project of a friend from Göttingen. I didn’t make it to their gig in Oldenburg and now I stumble on them by accident. What are the odds? A couple of minutes later I stumble over a couple of other friends, who also didn’t know about the festival before. One send me a text which I was back at home at 3am. After enjoying Ego vs Emo the next band was announced. Großstadtgeflüster. Especially while working in Oldenburg I really enjoyed some of their lyrics…

So instead of sitting at home alone I was on a festival with friends listening to two kickass bands. Thanks universe, that was a good one!

As usual when I begin a new project with a tight schedule I start with something which is plenty of work, expensive and of limited use. After getting bogged at the Meierei I was lucky to find a guy who will deliver an rear axle with a better transmission ratio and (drumroll) a locking differential. If you don’t know what a locking differential is and/or you want to see a good explanation watch this video (warning, long intro). Now I am really exhausted, working on vans really is like working out in the gym…

I just returned from the annual party of some friends who are living in the countryside. It was really nice as usual, I met quite some folks I haven’t seen for some time and I really enjoyed myself. The only downer was that it was raining straight from Saturday afternoon until Monday evening. So we spend most of the time in the shed where we couldn’t light a fire. It was cold as well. I had to put on two sweaters, my winter double jacked (fleece + hard shell), two trousers, two pairs of socks and a woollen hat to feel comfortable during the night. Normally I wear less at -10 degrees but the totally moist air at +5 degrees is really pulling the heat out of your body.

Well, this is embarrassing. When I wanted to leave I got bogged with the 310d for the first time. On a wet meadow. After 48h of continuous rain it was soaking wet. I feared the narrow gate and was too slow on the part which goes just a little little bit uphill. When I realized that I wasn’t moving despite the fact that the wheels are turning I quickly changed to reverse but it was too late. The tire profile was full with mud and I was stuck.

All the usual “quick tricks” like reducing tire pressure, putting carpet under the tires, putting wooden planks in front of the tires, … didn’t work. Eventually we got it out by pulling with another car simultaneously  pushing with three guys.

What a start for the off road season… I always hated mud. I think I know why…

This one is weighting hard on me. Maybe I’m lucky enough to find a rear axle with a differential lock. Combined with larger rims and decent tires the van should achieve limited off road capabilities. I definitely have to buy anti skid chains at least.
